Higher-order theories of consciousness

Higher-order theories of consciousness propose that consciousness is based on perceptions or thoughts about our own mental states. Specifically, phenomenal consciousness is believed to be a higher-order representation of perceptual or quasi-perceptual contents. These theories differ from other cognitive accounts of consciousness that argue that consciousness is solely based on first-order mental processes.
