History is the systematic study and documentation of the human past. It includes the memory, discovery, collection, organization, presentation, and interpretation of events before the invention of writing systems. Historians use verifiable evidence to create narratives that explain the cause and effect of past events. It is taught in schools and studied in universities as a major discipline. Herodotus and Thucydides are considered two of the earliest historians in the Western tradition.
