Group theory is a branch of abstract algebra that studies the algebraic structures known as groups. It is central to other algebraic structures, and has applications in physics, chemistry, cryptography, and materials science. Its history dates back to the 19th century, and culminated in the classification of finite simple groups in the 20th century.
