Ising Model

Ising model

The Ising model is a mathematical model of ferromagnetism which consists of discrete variables representing magnetic dipole moments of atomic "spins" that can be in one of two states. It was invented by Wilhelm Lenz and solved by his student Ernst Ising, and has been used to identify phase transitions and as a simplified model of reality. It can also be formulated as a graph maximum cut problem and solved via combinatorial optimization.

CS 263 Counting and Sampling

Stanford University

Autumn 2022

The course addresses both classic and recent developments in counting and sampling. It covers counting complexity, exact counting via determinants, sampling via Markov chains, and high-dimensional expanders.
