Fields

Field (mathematics)

Fields are sets of numbers on which addition, subtraction, multiplication and division are defined. Examples include the field of rational numbers, real numbers and complex numbers. Fields are used in many areas of mathematics, such as number theory and algebraic geometry, and are foundational notions in mathematical analysis. Galois theory studies the symmetries of field extensions.
