A modular equation is an algebraic equation satisfied by moduli, which is used in the moduli problem for elliptic curves. It is expressed as a non-zero polynomial of two variables over the complex numbers and defines the modular curve. Modular equations first arose in the theory of multiplication of elliptic functions.
