A digraph is a pair of characters used to represent a single phoneme or sequence of phonemes. Some digraphs are used to represent sounds that cannot be represented with a single character, while others are relics from earlier periods of the language. Digraphs may also be considered individual letters in some languages' orthographies. In some cases, digraphs may develop into ligatures.
