Reductions

Reductions

Reductions were settlements established by Spanish and Portuguese rulers to relocate indigenous people into urban settlements for evangelization and assimilation. These settlements facilitated civil and religious control over populations, as well as the organization and exploitation of their labor. The practice began in the Caribbean and was later implemented in Peru during the rule of Viceroy Francisco de Toledo.
