Swept wings are used on jet aircraft to delay the shock waves and aerodynamic drag rise caused by fluid compressibility near the speed of sound, improving performance. They have been used since the pioneer days of aviation and were first investigated in Germany in 1935. Swept wings come in various forms, including forward sweep, variable sweep wings and oblique wings.
