Microcode is a set of hardware-level instructions that implement higher-level machine code instructions or control internal finite-state machine sequencing. It enables greater flexibility in designing and altering instructions, facilitates the construction of complex multi-step instructions, and allows for emulation of more robust architectures. It is sometimes referred to as microprogramming or firmware.
