S/KEY is a one-time password system used for authentication to Unix-like operating systems. It combines a user's real password with a short set of characters and a decrementing counter to form a single-use password, which can be generated locally or remotely. It is supported in Linux, OpenBSD, NetBSD, FreeBSD, and OpenSSH, and is falling into disuse due to two-factor authentication schemes.
