Software-defined networking (SDN) is an approach to network management that enables dynamic, programmatically efficient network configuration to improve performance and monitoring. It centralizes network intelligence in one component by separating the forwarding of packets from the routing process. SD-WAN applies similar technology to a wide area network (WAN).
