Inverse kinematics is a mathematical process used to calculate the variable joint parameters needed to place the end of a kinematic chain in a given position and orientation. It is the reverse operation of forward kinematics, which calculates the end position from the joint parameters. Inverse kinematics can also be used to recover movements of an object from other data such as a film.
