Proof-of-stake (PoS) is a consensus mechanism for blockchains that selects validators based on their cryptocurrency holdings. It was first used in Peercoin in 2012 and is an alternative to proof-of-work (POW) schemes, which require computational cost. PoS still resembles POW on the surface.
