Buffers

Buffer solution

A buffer solution is a mixture of a weak acid and its conjugate base, or vice versa, used to maintain a nearly constant pH when a small amount of strong acid or base is added. It is found in many chemical applications and in nature for pH regulation, such as the bicarbonate buffering system in blood and the ocean.
